Drank tap water. Ate something from a supermarket. All three were tested in a lab. And in that lab, a piece of software called LIMS made sure nothing went wrong. LIMS stands for **Laboratory Information Management System**. Fancy name. Simple idea: it's the software that tracks every sample, every test, and every result in a laboratory - so humans don't have to remember it all. What does it actually do? - **Tracks samples** - from the moment they arrive to the moment results go out - **Automates workflows** - tells the lab what to test, when, and how - **Stores results** - every data point, searchable, forever - **Ensures compliance** - proves to regulators that everything was done properly - **Connects instruments** - pulls data directly from lab machines (no human typing) Where is it hiding? - **💊 Pharma** - every batch of medicine is tested and tracked in a LIMS - **💧 Water** - your tap water is tested daily; LIMS manages those results - **🍔 Food & beverage** - safety testing from farm to shelf - **🔬 Forensics** - DNA evidence, toxicology, crime labs - **🌍 Environmental** - soil, air, pollution monitoring 3 stats that might surprise you: 1. The LIMS market is worth over **$2 billion** globally \[1\] 2. The **first** commercial LIMS systems appeared in the **early 1980s** - the industry is now over 40 years old \[2\] 3. During COVID, a single LIMS-powered system processed upto **8,000 tests per day with just 4 staff** \[3\] The simplest way to think about it: | | *A LIMS is to a lab what air traffic control is to an airport.
